Springing Forward with God: Say Yes!

04.01.2019 by Lavonna Garner //

Hello and welcome to Facets of Faith! We’re glad you stopped by this week. We’ve been waiting to introduce you to our beautiful friend, Lavonna Garner. She is definitely someone you should know. Her soul is gentle. Her prayer is fierce. She is a wonderful teacher and friend. Take a peek at her thoughts on springing forward with God.

Share Lavonna with your friends! And let’s talk about springing forward in the comments below or at our Facebook Page!

How Will You Spring Forward With God? (Guest)

God is always moving! From the beginning of creation, we see Him at work. In fact, God was moving before the earth was formed!

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2, NLT)

As daughters of the Most High, we serve a mighty God who is active and present in the earth. He has a purpose and plan for each of us; it is as unique as the prints upon our fingers which bear their individual identity. In His love, God designed a plan for all of creation; and out of His love, He invites us to participate in it through the work of His Holy Spirit.

How will YOU spring forward with God?
In light of “spring” defined, how will you “move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward” with God? What will you DO to experience, not just movement, but the fullness of “spring” defined with our Father?

Some of us will have to rid ourselves of things, thoughts, and/or perhaps people, to accomplish this. Sudden or rapid upward or forward movement can not be achieved if we are carrying excess weight. Possessions accumulated to fulfill a desire long passed now clamor for so much of our time and attention that we have no time for God; cares burden our hearts and clutter our minds; unhealthy thoughts, habits, and relationships that produced fruit undesirable to us and others all open the door to the enemy. Our failure to “clean house” not only gives Satan permission to wreak havoc in our lives, but can, dare I say, “constipate” our walk with God. Refusal to release the things that bind us will hinder our ability to not only move with God, but virtually make it impossible for us to experience sudden or rapid upward and forward mobility in our relationship with Him.

What or who do YOU need to release to spring forward with God?

During my young adult years, I had a vision and a plan for my future. That plan, however, did not always coincide with the will of my Heavenly Father. There were seasons where I not only chose to have my way and did, but also rejected The Way, The Truth, and The Life that had been beautifully established for all of creation before the foundation of the world began. God, in spite of my disobedience, patiently waited for His prodigal daughter to return home. It wasn’t until I was able to embrace the unconditional love my Father had for me and His forgiveness, that I was able to approach His launching pad.

What do YOU need to embrace in order to spring forward with God?

The power of saying “YES!”
From the time we were little, we exerted our power. Phrases like “No!”, “I don’t want that!”, “You can’t make me!”, and my eldest daughter’s favorite, “I can do it myself!” became the threads  many of us unknowingly wove into the fiber of our relationship with God. I certainly understand why we, as believers, are called “children of God.” We hang onto our threads, refuse to listen to wisdom, and insist on doing life our way. We fail to see the power of saying “yes” to God and the beautiful tapestry He has woven, and we settle for a life unraveled and undefined.

This New Year, I made a commitment to say yes to God! Unless my Holy Spirit emergency discernment system sends me a warning, I am saying yes to the LORD’s will and to the way He chooses to unfold it. Yes to fasting…yes to being intentional in my effort to study scripture…yes to accepting opportunities that take me outside of my comfort zone…yes to not being attached to the outcome…yes to a life of obedience (which by the way, brings deliverance), and yes to no longer being “too difficult to work with.” (Those were words the LORD spoke to my heart years ago.) Living a yes-centered life has stretched and catapulted me forward with God! It is only the beginning of March, and I have seen God’s hand move in amazing ways—being invited to write this post is just one of them! My “yes” will move my Father’s heart and will allow me to spring forward in and with Him.

What is God inviting you to say “yes” to that will spring you forward with Him?

My word for 2019 is “expectancy.” This year, I am expecting great things! As I spring forward with God, I will grow in my understanding of His will, live a yes-centered life, and see His promises to me and my family fulfilled. In Him I am committed to living, moving (springing forward), and having my being (Acts 17:28)!

How will you spring forward with God?

How Have I Found Family? We All Can Find Family.

02.26.2019 by Anne Marie Sopiarz //

Welcome to FACETS of Faith.  We are wrapping up our series Have you found your family with our guest contributor, Anne Marie Sopiarz.  I (Tracy) met Anne Marie at a Christian Women Business Organization meeting. She was the guest speaker and blessed us with her communication gift during her talk on connection with others.  I knew I wanted to share her gift with others, like seed scattered so that others could receive the good gifts God has for us all through what He puts on her heart.  With that, enjoy Anne Marie’s contribution to this month’s topic on family. Have You Found Your Family? (Guest)Family. What a complicated word! Ask someone about “family” and you will likely get an emotional response. The response might be a huge smile representing love and thankfulness. The response might be eyes that glance downward revealing deep wounds and hurt at the mention of family.

Family is complicated in my life too! I have a brother who didn’t grow up with us, and my father has been married a few, well lots, of times.

I have friends all around the country whom I consider family, and I am blessed when I look at the beautiful family God has given my husband and me! This little nuclear family includes our adopted daughter who has shaped my understanding of family dramatically.

Most of all, when I think of family I think of the family of God. God is my good Father, and I am His child.

I have been blessed to study the book of Romans in-depth this year through BSF. We dig and dig each week into a handful of verses. We wrestle with each one and let God speak to us. What a gift!

As a result of my study of the book of Romans, I have been struck lately with the truth that we are adopted as God’s children. I am a child of God. If you are a believer, then you are a child of God too.

Adoption is quite the word.

My study of Romans left me considering adoption, but life experience made it come alive.

Last December I sat in the courtroom for another hearing on behalf of our foster daughter. But this one was not just another hearing. It was her “best case” hearing. Basically, our agency was laying out evidence to the judge that our daughter’s “best case” was to be adopted by us– her foster family who has loved and cared for her most of the years of her life. It was gut wrenching and sacred. I was not “allowed” to speak in court, but I sobbed silently in the last row as the judge declared my girl’s standing and placement to be “best” with my husband and me.

She has been ours all along, but with this declaration she becomes a full member of our family, and she inherits full rights as our daughter!

It’s the same for God with you  and me, adopted with full rights!

God, our Father, sees each of us as His child.

How does God feel when we let Him claim us as His daughter or son? Probably similar to how I felt in that courtroom!

We are His all along. Once we realize that truth, we can finally be freely loved by God. We get the full benefits of being His child.

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” Jesus in John 14:18

Behave instead like God’s very own children, adopted into His family– calling Him Abba, Father. Romans 8:15

The Greek word for adoption here is a term referring to the full legal standing of an adopted male heir in Roman culture. God, our good, good Father adopts us. We will experience this fully one day (Romans 8:23), but it makes a difference in our life here and now as well. We are His. You are His. You are claimed and adopted. I am claimed. I have been declared His child. What a gift!

I get emotional when I let this truth sink in and when I live out of that place. How about you?

When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Galatians 4:4-6  (emphasis added)

There were legal realities God had to deal with, which is why He sent His Son, Jesus, to cover our sins. His justice and law demanded punishment and exclusion from his presence because of our sins. God’s mercy brought our redeemer, Jesus. His sacrifice on the cross and our acceptance of Him as Savior gives us righteousness in Christ. God had to satisfy His justice and His law in order to adopt sinners into his family. This He did by the life, death, and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ.

God our Father cries in the courtroom too. It has been decided. We have been claimed. Let Him claim you. Let Him claim me.

I have Full Rights as His daughter! My prayer is that I sit in it and live from it. How about you? Family to a believer means being a child of God! I thank God for this truth today!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Do you desire to be part of the family of God? He wants nothing more than to adopt you as His son or daughter, dearly loved. He died so you can freely live, both here on earth and in heaven. He sets the lonely in families, where as Christians we call each other brother and sister. If you would like to be adopted into God’s family, say this prayer from your heart:

I believe You, Jesus, died on the cross for the forgiveness of my sin. I believe You love me enough to die for me, and You desire my adoption into Your family. I commit to following You as You lead and guide the way like any good parent would do. Show me what is best for my life and help me to live in light of that truth.  I know being a Christian comes with blessings but doesn’t eliminate every trial either. The difference, though, is I am never alone as a child of God. Thank You for never leaving me, nor forsaking me. Thank You for helping me navigate each day as You help me every step of the way. Help me to hear Your voice, to listen and to obey the good, loving, Fatherly guidance You have for me. In Jesus’ name, amen!

If you just said the above prayer, WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!

Reckless Love Endures. Receive It.

11.27.2018 by Erin Thompson //

This month FACETS of Faith continues its exploration of God’s most enduring attributes, inspired by Psalm 136.  This week, we invite our friend and guest contributor Erin Nicole Thompson to share what she finds most enduring about God. Erin is the founder of Be Brilliant Ministries and the author of Daughters: Your Identity Rescued, Your Value Restored.  For more information about her ministry or Bible study, check out her website.

And for more inspiration of God’s enduring attributes, check out Tracy’s piece on God’s faithfulness and Jennifer’s piece about God’s graciousness.

Without further ado, let Erin’s words wash over you, revealing God’s heart for each of you precious readers.  We pray you are changed because God met you in and through it.

What is your best attribute? Your most enduring, inherent quality? What do others count on you for? Mercy? Wisdom? Kindness? Are you stumped? It can be a hard question to answer for ourselves.

Well, how about your spouse? Your parents? Or what about God?

What attribute of God do you just love? Appreciate most? Which is most precious to you?

For me?

It’s nice you asked.

My initial response was goodness. God’s goodness. That must be it.

But no.

Sometimes I struggle to understand His goodness in a situation, at least due to my limited perspective. Sometimes His goodness feels far off. Maybe you can relate.

So what is my most constant, consistent conviction of who God is to me?

Love.

The most precious attribute of God: Reckless Love (E. Thompson)

Reckless love. Relentless love.

Ever-present. Ever-reaching. Ever-lasting. Never–ending.

God’s love – the reality of it, my experience of it, and my response to it – has to be His most precious inherent attribute to me.

It is more than an attribute. It is a reality. “God is love” (1 John 4:16). His very essence.  His being. Love. He doesn’t just give it. He is it.

And because of that, His love is unlike any that has been experienced or existed on earth.

His love is unfailing. It is described as such a whopping 141 times in the Bible. I think that deserves a mic-drop.

We all can sing, “Jesus loves me.” But it seems more often we struggle to be satisfied by God’s love.

If that is you, I understand. Because for more years than I would like to acknowledge, I knew God loved me but I struggled to feel His love. To receive it.

So if you’re like me, here is a five-step-start down the road to be satisfied by the love of God.

“For the Lord your God is living among you.

He is a mighty savior.

He will take delight in you with gladness.

With his love, he will calm all your fears.

He will rejoice over you with joyful songs” (Zephaniah 3:17).

Each line of Zephaniah 3:17 is like the guidance of a GPS. Each line shows us where to start and where to turn next. It guides us into an experience of the love of the Father.

“For the Lord your God is living among you.”

First, recognize God’s presence. We need to acknowledge it. When we rise in the morning and moan, “must have coffee,” realize God is with you. As you stumble to the coffee maker say, “Good Morning.”

“He is a mighty savior.”

As your fingers feel the reality of the heat through the mug, request God to fight for you in the day’s battles. Lay your worries at His feet. And realize that He is a mighty savior and no match for what faces you that day. Our second turn is to request God to fight for you and realize He will prevail.

“He will take delight in you with gladness.”

After we invite the Lord into our worries, we can allow our eyes to be lifted to His face. And let’s not stare at the floor but look into His eyes. Deep into His eyes and see how He feels about us. What He thinks of us. Because He calls us beloved. Chosen. His. Adored. Sought out. If that is what He thinks of you, what is His gaze like? May those realities allow you to feel His delight.  Receive it.

“With his love, he will calm all your fears.”

Next, we rest in God’s love. “Perfect love expels all fear” (1 John 4:18). Do you have any fears?  I do.  But when I stand in God’s perfect love, it is the closest I come to being fearless. To rest in that love maybe you need to sit. Or kneel with your face to the floor. As He sings over you because…

“He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

God serenades you.  Loudly. Boldly. Proudly. You are His, He is yours and He wants everyone to know it. He rejoices over you. You bring Him joy.  Let that sink in and then respond. Show Him how you feel about that. Respond to God’s adoration and see if you feel blessed. Free. Forgiven. Released from the burdens of this world and the baggage you have been dragging around. And then run, run into His arms and allow your soul to be surrounded in His embrace.

His reckless love is present. It is pursing you. Fighting for you. Delighting in you. Calming you. Rejoicing over you.

We must receive it. Respond. And soon God’s enduring essence will become our defining feature.  Reckless love.

Take a moment to receive.  Enjoy and receive.

What enduring attribute of God’s do you value most?  Join the conversation here or on our Facebook page.
